3D printing

Definition

3D printing is a process of creating three-dimensional objects by depositing materials layer by layer based on a digital model.

The process typically begins with designing a 3D digital model. The model is then sliced into thin layers using specialized software, which generates instructions for the 3D printer to follow. The printer then builds the object layer by layer, using a variety of materials such as plastic, metal, ceramic, or even living cells.

Example

Imagine you are developing a new kitchen gadget. Using CAD software, you design a virtual model of the device. Next you upload the file to a 3D printer, which produces a physical prototype of the gadget within hours or days, depending on the complexity of the design. Next you test the prototype functionality, fit, and finish.
